Grid load management for multiple EV rapid chargers.

Problem

Allego installed two 50kW rapid chargers, one on each side of a motorway in Wanlin.

The problem was to ensure that the use of the chargers did not cause the grid constraint to be exceeded and what logic should be used to prioritise the two chargers.

Solution

An E-STOR system was installed in active load management mode. Operating in this way the chargers are controlled by the E-STOR via Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and are only allowed to charge the vehicle when the combined power from the grid and the E-STOR is sufficient to ensure the constraint will not be breached.

The control system enables the maximum amount of energy transferred or the charge duration to be controlled so the battery capacity can be maintained as the use of the chargers increases. Increasing sophistication can be added as required.
